Biography

Combining a densely layered three‐guitar attack with raw, nervy vocals, Mittenfields have drawn comparisons to some of the best indie rock acts of the 1990s. Far from an

exercise in pure nostalgia, however, the DC‐based ensemble has crafted its own unique sound combining elements of indie rock, shoegaze and noise pop.

Singer/bassist Dave Mann formed Mittenfields in 2008 with guitarist Sam Sherwood. After adding wunderkind math‐rock drummer Brian Moran to the mix, the lineup of

the band was completed with the arrival of guitarists Donald Seale and Michael Ball in late 2010. The quintet quickly headed into DC’s Inner Ear Studios, cranked up a wall of amps, and let it rip.

Mittenfields released their debut EP, The Fresh Sum, in July 2011, with the tracks “My Mind Is An Avalanche” and “Goliath FTW” being featured on college radio and

podcasts in the US and Canada. The band plans to return to the studio soon to record a follow‐up, and in the meantime is planning a series of east coast dates in support of The Fresh Sum.

Description

Mittenfields have a rather enviable problem: they’re often too big for the room. At a recent gig by the newest incarnation of the quintet, the combination of Dave

Mann’s dark cutting bass lines and the maelstrom of the new three-guitar assault, the cozy Galaxy Hut felt like it might split apart like a De Havilland Comet at

any time. And with Mittenfields, it’s not simply about volume. Far louder bands don’t have this effect. I’ve thought long and hard about why Mittenfields – five

soft-spoken, seemingly normal, affable guys – might have this effect on a space and all I can come up with is ambition. Mittenfields don’t really go half-way;

they have an almost operatic sense of drama (both musically and sonically). A relatively simple song isn’t so simple after being mangled by three guitars taking

three distinct angles and howled out toward the sky by the usually cheery Mann. In fact, it is the steady, propulsive rhythm section that keeps these songs from

spinning wildly out of control and focuses the tension back toward the center of the room where it threatens to, at the very least, tip over your drink. Mittenfields

dares to think big at a time when lots of bands prefer to play small-ball. Having only seen Mittenfields play in smaller venues, I wonder how completely they could

fill a larger space and what dangers they might pose if given such a platform.

Re: “Mixed Signals (On The Rocks)” off of The Fresh Sum EP.

“It’s excellent! It’s very committed! I like it a lot.”

-Travis Morrison (The Dismemberment Plan)
